OpisDesign Paolo Piva . Smara – when the bed becomes a living area Smara, an unusual bed designed for Wittmann by Paolo Piva, brings a new note of enjoyment to the bedroom. The bed owes its appeal not just to its striking design but also to its completely new functions. It is a piece for those who have the highest expectations of their bed and see it as more then just a place to sleep. Here, the bed becomes a living area. The base is a specially develop solid wood platform which is ventilated from below. On it are two ultra-compact 30 cm thick interior sprung mattresses which dispense with the need for a slatted insert. The position of the mattresses can be freely adjusted on the base platform, allowing the space between them to be changed at will. Smara makes an ideal double bed as well as two clearly separated singles, and everything in between. New uses can also be opened up simply by shifting the mattresses. The right setting for breakfast, reading, lazing, watching television or relaxing is easy to create in this way. And when you get up in the morning the bed can be rearranged for a new look each day, giving free rein to your creativity. The footboard is also unusual, as it looks like a table or bench with a delicate special steel frame, depending on the angle it is viewed from. High but open and light, it provides a striking visual closure and also has a practical function – it is equally suited for use as a seat or a breakfast table. |
